Understanding Stress and Fear in Business Start-Ups
When embarking on the journey of starting a new business, or expanding into unfamiliar territory, it is common to experience stress and fear. This reaction is deeply rooted in our evolutionary history; humans are hardwired to feel apprehensive in new situations. Such feelings prepare us to respond swiftly to unfamiliar threats, much like our caveman ancestors who entered new hunting grounds with unknown dangers. The resulting hyper vigilance, while protective, can lead to prolonged stress.
Why Feeling Apprehensive Is Normal
As you move forward with a new business or expand your current operations, uncertainty is inevitable. The sense of “launching into the unknown” often brings about feelings of terror, stress, and doubt. It is important to recognize that this reaction is perfectly normal. In fact, if you were not experiencing any stress or fear about taking such a big step, it might be a cause for concern. These emotions simply reflect the gravity and significance of the decisions you are making.
The Role of Courage in Overcoming Fear
In these moments, courage becomes essential. As defined by the Cambridge Dictionary, “Courage is the ability to control your fear in a dangerous or difficult situation.” Fortunately, there are practical ways to manage your fear when starting or growing your business. The key lies in planning.
Developing a Strategic Plan
Writing a Strategic Plan is one of the most effective ways to gain clarity and control over your business direction. The Strategic Plan allows you to define exactly what you want from your business and how you intend to achieve those goals. If the idea of staring at a blank page is daunting, remember that as your coach, I am here to support you. Together, we will work through targeted questions about your product or service, revenue targets, staffing requirements, and preferred work schedule. With these answers, you will be able to draft a concise, two-page document serving as your game plan for the next three to five years. Keep in mind, the Strategic Plan is a living document, subject to review and adjustment as circumstances evolve.
Using Strategy as a Benchmark for Decision-Making
A clear business strategy not only defines your objectives, but also provides a benchmark for evaluating every decision. When facing choices about how to proceed, ask yourself: “Is this course of action in line with my business strategy?” If the answer is yes, move forward. If not, consider why. You may need to revise your plan, or the answer may simply be to discard the idea if it does not align with your strategy.
Practical Example of Strategic Alignment
Consider the example of a car dealer who specializes in mid-size family vehicles. If you are contemplating branching out into selling tires and wheels, the strategic question is: “Will selling tires and wheels support the plan I created for my business?” By completing the Strategic Planning Process diligently, you will find it easy to decide whether to pursue this new direction or to pass on the opportunity.

Conclusion: The Power of Certainty
As William Congreve said, “Fear comes from uncertainty. When we are absolutely certain, whether of our worth or worthlessness, we are almost impervious to fear.” By embracing courage and strategic planning, you can transform uncertainty into confident action, guiding your business toward success.
